HOW IT WORKS

Never sit into or use a wheelchair without the seat and/or back upholstery installed!

Safer Locks are 100% bolt-on. No drilling is required and are easily removed if needed.

 

The Safer Automatic Wheelchair Lock automatically locks the chair wheels when a person's weight is lifted from the seat. By default, both wheels are locked until the time that weight is applied by the user.

 

This is how we can ensure that every time the wheelchair is unoccupied the wheels will be locked until the time that the user has safely transferred into the wheelchair.

 

As seen to the right; anytime the user is not in the seat, spring tension paddles mounted on both sides of the chair move upward, engaging the wheel lock pin into one of sixteen holes drilled into our wheel hubs. Wheels are instantly locked from moving in either direction. (Positive Locking)

The moment a transfer takes place and the user is seated safely back in the wheelchair, their body weight depresses both paddles.

This disengages the wheel lock pin from both wheel hubs as seen to the left, allowing the wheelchair to roll as it normally would.

 

By design, Safer Locks make unoccupied wheelchairs immobile at all times.

 

So how is an empty wheelchair rolled or transported?

 

Override Handles are added to the handles of the wheelchair allowing caregivers a simple way to disengage the locks and easily roll the wheelchair when it is not in use.

 

The wheelchair can be folded and retains all normal operations when Safer Locks are used.

The material used in Safer Automatic Wheelchair Locks was developed by one of America's top corporations, DuPont.

The polymer material used in the locks includes Zytel nylon, a component that is strong, durable, and slides easily against itself and metal without lubrication. Even when exposed to water, Zytel will never corrode.

 

All hardware is stainless steel and zinc, allowing Safer Locks to be disinfected using any cleaning method and solutions without the risk of rust or corrosion.

WHY USE SAFER LOCKS?

When manual wheel locks are not used while transferring to and from a wheelchair- A fall will likely occur.

The good news is that these types of falls can easily be prevented by using Safer Locks.

 

Wheelchair falls most commonly occur due to one of the following:

 

  • The wheelchair user or caregiver forgets to engage the manual wheel locks

  • The wheelchair user is unable to fully secure the manual locks on their own

  • The manual wheel locks are not adjusted correctly and will not properly lock the wheels

 

Any one of these scenarios can, and eventually will lead to the wheelchair rolling out from the user as they attempt to stand from or sit into the chair.

 

Our mission from day one has been to eliminate unnecessary injuries and the long-term effects on individuals once a fall occurs.

 

  • About 1/3 of the elder population over the age of 65 will fall each year, and the risk of falls increases proportionately with age. By age 80, more than half of seniors fall annually

  • Those who fall are two to three times more likely to fall again

  • Falls account for 25% of all hospital admissions, and 40% of all nursing home admissions. 40% of those admitted never return to living independently

  • 1/3 of seniors have a fear of falling

  • Falls have a detrimental impact on health and overall well-being. Close to half of seniors report that fear of another fall results in loss of confidence and their restriction of activities
